The critically-acclaimed and award-winning Kidz Danz Kompany, San Diego’s premier children’s dance company kicks off the 2020 season with their first production of the year,  “Children of the Revolution” at the San Diego Performing Arts Center (4579 Mission Gorge Place, San Diego, CA, 92120) on February 21-22, 2020 @ 7pm

In the tradition of their activism through dance KDK will tackle topics such as family separation, school lockdowns, and police brutality.  These topics affect our young people daily.  KDK uses their powerful voice through movement and freedom with hope for the future of their country.

In this production, KDK will restage some repertoire work as well as some new works. Repertory work includes “For Taylor” (2018), a solo work that opened KDK’s production of “The Constitution” and “A Fathers Love”, a 2011 work that celebrates the love of family and the impact of fatherhood on the family unit.  Also restaged, “Are My Hands Clean” (2015) highlights the truth about products made for Americans in underdeveloped countries.  It shows our need to have inexpensive products while turning a blind eye to the impact on our climate and the human cost.

KDK also welcomes guest choreographer Emily Navarra.  She is the founder and director of The Movement Kitchen in Chicago, Illinois.  She is also the curator of Holding Common Ground, an annual cultural exchange dance event in Vietnam.  Emily will present her work “I’m Still Here”, which first premiered in Vietnam in April 2019.  It will make its USA premiere with KDK. Originally choreographed on adult dancers, this work has been entrusted to the talented dancers of KDK.  “I’m Still Here” is about being fully present with the experience. Common humanity is that reminder that we all suffer. We are all mortal, vulnerable, and imperfect. This suffering is part of the shared human experience. Although we all may stumble, we are also so powerful. The evening will also include a guest performance by Visionary Dance Theatre.  VDT will present a work from the internationally acclaimed choreographer Jeanne Travers.

From their choreographic studies, the dancers of KDK will present a new work entitled “A Child’s Cage”.  This powerful study is a protest piece that addresses the humanitarian crisis of this country’s policy on family separation and the cruel conditions taking place with the imprisonment of young children.  KDK will also pull out some of their more fun and upbeat works “The Children of the Revolution” and “Kidz Of America”.  To end the evening, Artistic Director Spencer John Powell will premiere a new work titled, “The Kidz are Coming”.

Bring your friends and family down to check out this moving and thought-provoking dance concert featuring the award-winning and critically acclaimed Kidz Danz Kompany.  Catch them before they head off to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam where they will perform in the Holding Common Ground dance festival as Kidz Danz Kompany was the only children’s dance company ask to perform and participate in this event.
