Myriam Lucas: Callous

Join us as for a full evening-length production as Myriam Lucas presents Callous, a Mounarath-Powell Production, at the Visionary Performance Space (7202 El Cajon Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92115) on August 8th-9th @ 8pm. Callous [Kahlo-us]: Is a development of Myriam Lucas’ work titled Two Fridas: Diego, if you…could…just…love…me , originally performed at Jean Isaac’s Young Choreographer’s Prize Showcase and awarded with Audience Favorite. Callous focuses on Frida’s artistic vulnerability by bringing to the forefront the way in which Frida’s work is relatable. Frida Kahlo’s art work is significant till this day because it is raw, honest and evokes deeply human responses. Callous is not so much a Frida Kahlo biography, as it is more so a translation from one medium of art to another…the canvas to the body.

Myriam Lucas began dancing as a hip-hop freestyle artist, something that greatly influences her choreography and teaching methods. Her formal training began with Eveoke Dance Theatre at the age of 17. Through Eveoke she graduated from a two year teacher training program. Her first full length, co-choreographed production, Refuge , was a hip-hop/spoken word show based on cycles of violence in the lives of women. In June of 2012 her co-choreographed show, BREAK , played at the La Jolla Playhouse . BREAK won her and her co-choreographer, Becky Hurt, a Bravo Award for Best Dance Show. In February of 2014 her piece Two Fridas: Diego, if you…could…just…love…me, was awarded Audience Favorite at San Diego’s 5th Annual Young Choreographer’s Prize Showcase . She currently is a teaching artist at the Culture Shock Dance Center. Myriam works to spread love, reflection, healing, and cultivation of creativity in her teaching, choreography and existence.
