Visionary Dance Theatre presents their fall dance concert “Psalms” at the City Heights Performance Annex (3795 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, CA, 92105) on September 8th-10th @ 8pm.

Artistic Director Spencer John Powell will premiere a new work in this concert.  “Psalms” is a piece about hope and looking toward a new and bright existence of the light within…and overcoming of darkness. The challenge of shining the light from inward out is beautifully executed through movement and music as the VDT dancers bring a fresh and athletic approach to this work. Audiences will be moved to new heights as they experience this big movement work.

Trixi Anne Agiao will also premiere a new work titled “Sacred Songs of the Stigmatized”.  This work depicts a group of young adults struggling to live with their psychological challenges. Using storytelling, dance and her own personal experiences, Agiao offers insight into a group whose illnesses are readily dismissed by society, but who persevere nevertheless. The piece works to reach the audience not only with emotionally charged movement, but through sharing stories audience members can possibly relate to, whether they like it or not. According to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults in America experience a mental illness, and nearly 1 in 25 (10 million) adults in America live with a serious mental illness. Also, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in youth ages 15 – 24. Even with these statistics, mental illness and those living with it are heavily criticize and disregarded.

Choreographed by Assistant Artistic Director Ramon Montes, Spencer John Powell’s Kidz Danz Kompany, San Diego’s critically acclaimed and only children’s modern dance company, will be the concert opener and set the evening.

Visionary is additionally proud to premiere its new pre-professional apprentice company. This fresh new program takes teen and adults who wish to study with the professional dancers of VDT and readies them for the professional world of dance. After a long summer intensive, the pre-professional company will take the stage along with the professionals of VDT in this dynamic concert!

Join us for an evening of new beginnings…two world premieres, “Psalms” and “Sacred Songs of the Stigmatized”, and a new pre-professional company.
