Visionary Dance Theatre presents “Grace Note” at the City Heights Performance Annex (3795 Fairmount Ave, San Diego, CA, 92105) on June 9th-10th, 2017 @ 8pm. This marks the kick-off of VDT’s spring dance concert tour.
Artistic Director Spencer John Powell presents excerpts from a work in progress titled “Majestic Beauty of Hate”. The work will premiere in spring 2018 as a full evening-length production in collaboration with Trixi Agiao. Inspired by today’s political climate, this work explores racism, bigotry, homophobia, misogyny and many other faces of hate.
Internationally-acclaimed choreographer and Professor of Dance at University of South Florida Jeanne Travers presents the California premiere of her work titled “What If”. Travers additionally sets her athletic piece “Into Mergence” on the VDT dancers. She has received invitations to present her choreography nationally and internationally in North America, South America, Europe and North Africa. Travers has also been the recipient of several awards, including her most recent State of Florida, Division of Cultural Affairs Choreographic Fellowship for Outstanding Choreography. She has been awarded numerous State of Florida International Cultural Exchange Grants, and an award for excellence in choreography through the Visions of Hope Organization.
Trixi Agiao (Incoming Assistant Artistic Director) premieres a new work titled “Feeding”, an introspection on how we readily consume information in today’s world and how doing so affects our perception of reality. Kiona Daelyn (former VDT Master Teacher and Ballet Mistress) also premieres a new work titled “Uitwaaien”. A Dutch word that means to take a brief walk in the countryside to clear one’s head, “Uitwaaien” explores stress building into anxiety, and finding moments of clarity by taking a break in nature.
Included in this production is a guest performance by the critically acclaimed Kidz Danz Kompany, San Diego’s premier children dance company.
Bring your family and friends and join us for an evening filled with conscious and thought-provoking dance.
